In Cities: Skylines, as in life, crosswalks (or pedestrian crossings where I’m from!) let pedestrians, cyclists and dogs get from one side of the street to the other safely. They get added automatically at junctions and intersections.Cities Skylines Change Road Elevation

Aug 14, 2014  You can do useful things with this now - like add several 2/4/6 lane roads that just off your new stretched 'roundabout' and all connected with a y-shaped on/off ramp (that is, an off ramp and an on ramp). I'd provide a picture but I'm at work. It's highly efficient and you can use that design to create an entire industrial area with no traffic. Once you reach the required milestone the highways tab will appear in roads menu allowing you to build ramps and highways. I'm well past that milestone, highways and ramps are unlocked, the issue is that when I go to place one, it only wants to place it level with the ground, and of course wont as it wont allow a ramp to cut through the opposing travel lanes. Mar 15, 2015  I extended a highway down to an oil reserve to connect that with the major city. There is a one-way highway going away from the city and towards to oil, and I want to connect that with the oil reserve by building a bridge over the 2nd highway lane. I know I can do this with the pre-made junctions, but I have to need to spend some $20,000 on some overkill junction, when I just need a simple bridge.

Most of the time crosswalks just do what they do. Which is good, because there’s no way of turning them off. There are mods that let you remove them, but only the visuals. Functionally, they stay the same.

I’d love to see more control added in the future. It could sit amongst the existing traffic light/stop sign system. In fairness though, I think there’s a technical limitation. It seems that road and intersection textures don’t always align 100%, and the crossings hide the seam.

Now while we can’t remove them, there is a way we can add them without having to build a junction!

All you need to do is upgrade the road type in one place. Where the roads join, crosswalks appear. But there’s also a neater and more precise way to add them. Read on!Use crosswalks to reduce road traffic

There’s two ways to use crossings strategically. The first is to give pedestrians a street crossing away from your busiest junctions. That’ll help ease needless congestion caused by people on foot.

The second, bigger reason, is to make shortcuts across an estate. We can massively shorten the distance between people’s houses and transit stops or schools. Suddenly, lots of people who used to drive now find their journey is quicker on public transport. Bit by bit, you can reduce traffic all over the city (I wrote more about that here).Let’s use this really simple example:

Here’s the Elizabeth household. Five children live here, and they probably go to the local elementary school.

At the moment, the kids need to walk to the top of the street, across, and down again. Now obviously, in this case, that’s no problem. But let’s say that walk was just slightly further than they were willing to walk, and were instead driving every day. If we could shorten the route, we’d get lots more residents out of their cars, freeing up the roads.

So let’s add footpaths from the school to the Elizabeth household. Obviously, this fixes nothing unless they can cross the road. Our choices are a footbridge, an underpass… or a new crossing. Let’s delete the roads either side and draw a tiny bit of tree-lined road where we want the crossing.

Next, reconnect the roads, using a different type of road – like the plain version or the one with bike lanes.

And there you go!

Ideally, you’d do this with the game paused so that everyone else doesn’t move out as has happened here…

I hope you found this helpful. Before I found this out, I was building vast and complex bridge and underpass networks to achieve the same thing. More fun, probably, but not space-efficient. Not very efficient with my time, either…Cities Skylines City Layout Guide

In this guide, we’ll cover the question many experienced players ask – how to make cities skylines look realistic and nice-looking. Sometimes it happens that you have a big city and its parts look like crap. You may call this realistic because some real cities look like crap but many people want a nice and realistic city. So I decided to collect all Cities Skylines tips and tricks on creating a nice city layout.Don’t Overuse Cities Skylines Skyscrapers

There aren’t too many skyscrapers in the vanilla game. I’d say they are present in the high-tech office and touristic zoning plus some unique buildings. A less experienced player may overuse these kinds of zones and place them everywhere. As a result, the city doesn’t look realistic because there aren’t many real cities where all the area is covered with skyscrapers. Usually, it’s some business part of the city while other areas aren’t that tall. It’s especially strange to see a tall wall of buildings on the outskirts of your city where usually you’d see small houses.

So one of Cities Skylines layout tips is to find a good area or several for your business district. It may be a waterfront or a center with good communications – remember, it will produce a lot of traffic.Cities Skylines Zoning Near your Business DistrictCities Skylines How To Create Elevated Road

To make the surroundings of your business district look more realistic you may do one of the following Cities Skylines zoning tips

*Place a big park. It will add some foliage to your concrete jungle. Also, it will be used by citizens to get to the business area on foot.

*Use some high-density residential or commercial zoning. Avoid surrounding your skyscrapers with small housing

*Place some unique buildings which have a similar style. This will also bring more tourists. It would be strange to see an old palace next to the business center. This deserves a special paragraph.Raise Road Cities SkylinesUse Cities Skylines Building Themes

It’s great to use European building themes next to unique buildings of the same style. And it looks strange when someone places a high-tech building surrounded by cozy European houses. I create special old town areas with walking streets and some tourist attractions to make it look realistic. Plazas and parks also look great in such surroundings.

The high-tech buildings are good when surrounded by offices and green houses. Not Only Cells

During your cities skylines urban planning it’s always lucrative to place roads at the right angle and fill the cells with zoning. Although there are some real cities with such planning as Barcelona, you need to combine different approaches. Use some curved roads or build a central roundabout and make your roads running from it at different angles. This will bring some freshness to your Cities Skylines layout.

Some examples for inspiration I found on the Internet:Cities Skylines Best LayoutCities Skylines Waterfront Design

Waterfront is a significant focal point in city planning. First of all, it’s needed for some transportation systems such as port. Some part of it will be used for sewage. But also it provides you with a higher land value so don’t miss this opportunity. I even create lakes and channels to make more of such areas.

Place some touristic areas, crosswalks, and water buildings and you will make great use of this option.Your Cities Skylines Districts Should Not Be Dense OnlyCities Skylines How To Make Elevated Roads

Most likely you will have a quiet old town area that was created when high-density zoning was locked. Also, it would be realistic and good for your road traffic is you place some of such areas to your suburban parts. It may be an elite housing area on hills or next to the waterfront. Add some low-density commercial zone to make it a center of a small suburban community. It is a good step towards a realistic cityCities Skylines Realistic City

What is a realistic city? For me, it’s an imperfect one. Real cities grew for a long time facing numerous challenges. This means you don’t always have to rebuild the imperfect areas but accept them and expand further.

Thanks to Natural disasters DLC, you may face some additional challenges which will affect your city design such as floods, earthquakes and asteroid strike. This will also influence your city layout and that’s great.Micromanaging Cities Skylines City Design

When everything is more or less configured, I prefer starting micromanagement of my city design. Thanks to Parklife DLC, we have a lot of props to place on small empty areas in zones that are already built. Don’t miss this option to create some cozy corners in your city!Using Cities Skylines First Person View

There is no better way to assess your cities skylines city planning than viewing it as a citizen. Have a walk on avenues and parks and experience how your citizens feel.
